The Bandana Trend

DSC_0062.jpgDSC_0007.jpgDSC_0073.jpgDSC_0068.jpgDSC_0080.jpgMy last memory of owning, let alone wearing, a bandana was Mrs. G’s art class circa 2007. Picture young Nicole, not yet artistically inclined, fishing through bandanas between attempts at drawing fish for the science fair project. However, as time has gone by, both who I am, and the fashion world have evolved.

As a newly  20 -year-old in her junior year ( all you Virgos, you know who you are), I’ve run to make many a 9:30 AM class to understand that dressing chic and  “runway ready” isn’t always possible. When I slack in my fashion choices (we all have those days),  I’m not nearly as motivated or excited about the day ahead.

Cue in an accessory that dresses up any ‘jeans and T-shirt’ look so you can rock effortless chic without the effort. I’ve seen the bandana trend picking up for a couple of months, but I’ve been hesitant to try it, in case I started to resemble Anne of Green Gables.

What’s more versatile than a piece that doubles as a head piece and a neck scarf?

Here’s a look at the way I’ve been loving to style bandanas.

My Travel Morning Routine

Akerman060117.jpgAkerman060117-2.jpg 1. Wake Up

Unlike most mornings, I don’t have to be up at 6 a.m. for class or work. I’m usually awake by 7:30, so I don’t have to set an alarm unless I have somewhere to be. You can’t go wrong with your favorite pair of printed pajamas. I spend a solid thirty minutes scrolling through my social media accounts. I’m sure that you can all relate—especially when you have to rush through your breakfast and makeup routine because of it. On vacation, though, things are a little different (a lot lax)! Getting up is not nearly as difficult, so take the time to get your beauty rest. If you have to opt for glasses over contacts to do so, it is 100% worth it! How I get up sets up my mood for the rest of the day.

Akerman060117-4.jpg2. Cleanse

It’s crucial that you stay consistent with your skincare routine, no matter where you are. This is especially important if you’ll be on an airplane for a while, since the dry air will cause some unsightly breakouts. I always bring along my favorite facial cleanser. It’s portable, which makes it easy to plop into my suitcase before heading out.

Akerman060117-5.JPG3. Cup of Morning Joe

I’ve gotten into the routine of coffee every morning, and vacations are no different. The hotel that I stayed at has breakfast included, so I took advantage of the coffee station in the lobby more than once during my stay.

Akerman060117-7.jpgAkerman060117-6.jpg4. Explore

The purpose of traveling is to explore unchartered territory. I have been to Naples a couple of times before this trip, but never to this particular area. Exploring has led me to my favorite locally owned ice cream shop, and favorite shopping center.

A Weekend by the Shore

DSC_0398.jpgDSC_0420.jpgDSC_0388.jpgAkerman050117.jpgAkerman050117-2.jpg

Although I’m surrounded by palm trees and the ocean, I don’t often take advantage of all that nature’s given me. Between school far from the sandy beaches and quick weekend trips back home, I find little time for much else.  This is why a change of scenery for me makes all the difference. Roadtripping a few hours away allows me to put myself in a different state of mind, far from the confines of my laptop and inevitable responsibilities. Although it’s a town that I’ve already explored, I find there is always somewhere new to go. However, I’m a creature of habit, so I always gravitate towards my  favorite local ice cream shop.

Dressing for the weather is imperative, especially for me, as I  frequent the beach during my stay. I’ve been loving vibrant bomber jackets, and decided that I could style it for my trip as well. Overtop a one piece swimsuit, and you’re set to go. I always pack light, airy dresses as well, since you can never go wrong with them–whether dressed down with a pair of sandals or overtop a t-shirt and some wedges. On quick vacations, I like to keep my accessories light. A couple of dainty chokers make all of the difference, and you have to make a real effort to lose them! When it comes to traveling, you don’t have to feel like you’re missing out because you’re not jetsetting this summer. Take a roadtrip a couple of hours out with your favorite gal pals, or ride solo and take the opportunity to learn more about yourself.  My advice: Enjoy the change of pace and scenery, no matter where you go or who you go with!

NYC Style Diary

DSC_0062.jpgDSC_0054.jpgDSC_0040.jpgDSC_0081.jpgDSC_0072.jpgDSC_0093.jpg

I’m back and better than ever!

While I have kept up via social media (namely Instagram–shameless plug here: @nicoleakerman), I have wanted to create content for this blog for the last few weeks. I thought that my trip to NYC over spring break would be the perfect opportunity to do so. My sister and I endeavored to the bustling city  from our small college town two weeks from today. Having spent about a week in the city, I have come to the conclusion that you can probably live there for years and still not have hit every spot on the map (I have the twelve miles of steps walked per day to prove it). What I loved most about the city is how artistically driven it is, even as I trekked on 34th street towards Uniqlo ( it seemed to become a habit by the end of my trip), I stumbled upon dozens of characters there- fashion driven, clad in full on costumes, etc.

I thrived in an atmosphere where every individual is pursuing their passion, and although I didn’t know the young man in the suit on the subway, there is an energy that drives me to adventure and explore beyond the bounds of familiarity. One of my great finds: The Strand Bookstore, where I spent a few hours perusing various books while the place itself provided a respite from the cold and windy climate. When it came to how I dressed in the city, I wanted to retain my personal style underneath the layers. This vintage coat is a favorite of mine, something that I may have stolen from my mother’s closet. I can envision myself in a small studio, getting lost in the subway ( I’ve already mastered this skill), and hope to see this come to life post graduation.

City of Stars: La La Land Look

DSC_0648.jpgDSC_0659.jpgDSC_0676.jpgDSC_0750.jpg

La La Land wound up becoming one of my favorite films because it was traditionally untraditional. It merged dance, music and romance seamlessly, while remaining youthful and relevant. It also didn’t hurt that Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling played the leads. The influence of Singin’ in the Rain and the Umbrellas of Cherbourg was indisputable, but reminded me so much of why I love musicals in the first place. Beyond the strong, fleshed out characters, the plot was captivating. On screen, as in real life, the way that our lives intertwine can as easily come apart.

I loved the role that the wardrobe played in the film, through vibrant colors, patterns, and silhouettes. Mia (Stone’s character) had a dynamic personal style, marked initially by bright and vivacious yellow and blue tones that over time transitioned into deeper, more subdued grays and blacks. This comes as no surprise as the prospects of her original “dream” dwindle, or simply change throughout the movie. After googling one too many of her outfits, I was inspired to modernize 50s fashion.

Final verdict: La La Land is worth the hype, despite what some critics have to tell you.Still skeptical? I recommend taking a listen to the movie’s soundtrack.

Stay posted for another look inspired by the film coming to your computer screens soon.

New Years: Welcoming 2017!

DSC_0501.jpgdsc_0526DSC_0513.jpgDSC_0589.jpgDSC_0588.jpgDSC_0550.jpg

The start of a new year means a clean slate, and with it, loads of sparkling cider to celebrate.  Whether you spent the new years in the midst of the crowds in Times Square, or with a couple of friends in your hometown, I hope that you are all as excited for this upcoming year as I am ( after all, I have this banner to prove it).

And while I am looking forward to what’s in store for 2017, I can’t help but think about the events that marked my 2016. In 2016, I moved into my first apartment ( yes, adulting in its finest form), started and published the first post on this blog, discovered that my passion lies in the the fashion industry, and grew tremendously as a human being. Although I had my fair share of difficult moments this year, I recognize that moving past them is the only way that I can allow room for growth in this new chapter of my life.

Fashion Gift Guide: ’90s Chic

DSC_0138.jpg

DSC_0109.jpgDSC_0010.jpgDSC_0166.jpgDSC_0115.jpg

With the holiday season rolling around, it can prove difficult to find the perfect gift for all of your friends and family. Gift giving made easy: a new fashion series crafted to meet the needs of every fashionable lady in your life.

This week’s post is all about the ’90s girl– the one embellished in chokers and floral bodysuits on the daily, regardless of the occasion.  Since the ’90s are back in the fashion world,  shopping for this look is easier than you could imagine. With a few key pieces, you will be sure to check everything off of her holiday wish list, starting with an ornate choker. Aside from making the perfect stocking stuffers, these accessories are relatively inexpensive, so doubling up is easy.

In addition, this patched denim jacket adds the perfect element of girl-next-door. Whether DIY’d or purchased on mega sale online (like me), it’ll catch the eye of all of her friends, making any ordinary outfit stand out in the crowd. Propped alongside a pair of tinted sunglasses and a bright belt, it’s bound to evoke Cindy Crawford flashbacks.

Thanksgiving

DSC_0774.jpgDSC_0778.jpgDSC_0783.jpgDSC_0784.jpgDSC_0800.jpgDSC_0862.jpg

Hey everyone!

I thought it would be fitting to make a post all about my Thanksgiving this year! ( We still have a few hours until it’s really over, and calories will starting counting again).  This is the first year that my family cooked a vegan thanksgiving. I was grateful for the chance to have the family together and customize classical thanksgiving dishes to our liking. Although we are not tremendously daring when it comes to trying out new dishes,  it was our first time preparing these tofu “turkey” cutlets. The recipe can be found on Olivia Biermann’s youtube channel, which I am constantly keeping tabs on (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCtuwIdM0Zx7xCiZSa_clRzw).  The meaning of Thanksgiving can often become lost in translation amidst the frenzy of super sales and copious amounts of gravy, so it’s important to reflect on what one is truly thankful for. In our daily routines, we become accustomed to a fast-paced way of life that we often forget what is right in front of us. Whether you celebrated with your friends and/or family this year, remember this is a time to come together and to appreciate the meaningful people in our lives (furry friends included!).

Sweater Weather

DSC_0574.jpgDSC_0579.jpgDSC_0690.jpg

Hey everyone!

I took a little bit of a “hiatus” for a few weeks, but I’m back with another post all about embracing sweaters ( because I’ve honestly never met anyone who doesn’t like this time of year). I love layering various prints and fabrics under sweaters, especially collared button downs. I’ve been seeing a lot of  designers incorporate more traditionally masculine pieces/ styles into their clothes this season; a trend known as masculine feminine fashion. Although I can’t say I was ever a tomboy growing up, I’m all for incorporating these into my wardrobe in the coming months ( better late than never, I guess). I’ve actually been really interested in working to improve the layout of my website, and now that school has calmed down until finals week ( SOS, I don’t want December to come, I’m sure college students can relate), I am going to be channeling my time and energy into this blog. Stay tuned for a change in my website’s design soon, and keep up with my daily shenanigans on social media! My Instagram handle is @nicoleakerman

These Boots are Made for Walkin’

DSC_0042.jpgDSC_0222.jpgDSC_0146.jpg

Hey everyone!!

Coming to you guys this week with a simple, delicate look. I just received these mules from Lulus last week, so i decided that I would talk about them on the upcoming post! Not only do they provide me with a few inches of height, but they’re also comfortable (all things considered) and super easy to pair. They tie in the cream color in my sweater, permitting the overalls to stand out against the neutral colors. I have been all about this burgundy/ maroon/ wine color, especially for the fall time ( don’t have to look far back considering my scalloped skirt from last week). Midterm season is officially over, so I’ve been able to focus my attention on other endeavors this past week! I’m finally taking some time to hone in on my skills, and look into what I’m looking for in a future job/ career path. Although some could argue I’m way too early in the game, this research process has opened my eyes to the endless number of possibilities in the fashion industry.  From designers and photographers to the social media team behind a company’s online presence, there truly is a position catered to every individual’s interests and needs. I love the idea of getting to explore various routes hopefully sometime soon, and upon graduation.

Confession: I haven’t worn overalls since my days as a 90s kid clad in a denim, Mickey Mouse pair. However, ‘ll probably be called out as an outfit repeater with this pair. Not only are they easy to thrown on, but they make a sweater-boot combo infinitely cuter. I don’t plan on putting these booties away anytime soon, so look forward to more posts on how I style these bad boys!
